shutterstock_2462375535.jpegHair thinning sometimes occurs in the first year after bariatric surgery and then starts to regrow within a year. First and foremost - make sure you are consuming 60-80 grams of protein per day minimum. Second, taking your bariatric multivitamin, calcium and B-12 as recommended by your dietitian are also important. In addition, you can take a hair, skin and nail supplement. Third, make sure you are hydrated- drinking at least 64 ounces of non-caffeinated fluids daily.

Here are some additional tips for helping your thinning hair:

  • Talk to your hair stylist for recommendations for products which have more humectants in them and are more hydrating or what they specifically recommend for your hair to help with proper conditioning and hair growth.
  • Invest in silk, satin or sateen pillowcases. These will help prevent your hair getting caught on the pillowcase while you sleep.
  • Replace elastic hair bands with silk-covered scrunchies to hold back hair. Tie it loosely in order to avoid hair breaking or pulling out.
  • When you are adding shampoo and conditioner to your hair use a dry/wet brush to work it into your hair to apply product evenly and gently.
  • Use products which do not contain parabens or alcohol which can dry out hair.

Remember the majority of the time when you are consuming adequate protein, vitamins and fluids, you will experience your hair regrowth after the first year following surgery.
