What Is Revisional Surgery?

Revisional bariatric surgery is a procedure performed to correct, revise or reverse a prior bariatric surgical procedure. This type of surgery is usually recommended when the initial weight-loss goals are not being met or if there are complications with the original operation.

Some surgeons feel that patients get one “shot” to lose weight with weight loss surgery. We take a much different approach. We look at obesity as a disease, and if one treatment doesn’t work, we’ll try another. Our goal is to get you healthy.

If you want to discuss potential revisional surgery, call our office to schedule an appointment with one of our bariatric surgeons in Georgia. We are here to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there different types of revisional surgery?

Atlanta Bariatrics does perform revisional surgery for patients who have undergone lap band procedures. Lap band surgeries involve placing a band around the upper part of the stomach to restrict food intake.

Patients may find that the band is too tight and causes nausea or vomiting, or not tight enough and they are unable to achieve weight loss goals. In either scenario, revisional bariatric surgery can help address these issues.

Why might I want revisional bariatric weight loss surgery?

There can be a variety of reasons why someone may consider a revision. Some of the most common include:

  • Inadequate weight loss
  • Weight re-gain
  • Unresolved health problems
  • Medical or surgical complications

Some patients have previously undergone procedures that are not even performed currently and are known to be associated with weight re-gain, such as the Vertical-Banded Gastroplasty (stomach-stapling).

Are there different types of revisional surgery?

A wide range of revisional surgeries are available, and some patients convert over to a different procedure than the one they initially received. Some patients add an additional procedure, such as adding a band to their previous surgery or adding a plication. The types of revisional surgery available will vary for each patient depending on the original surgery performed and the reason the patient is requiring the revision.

Are your revisional surgeries invasive?

Nearly all of our revisions are done laparoscopically, meaning a quick hospitalization and recovery. Some are able to even be done as outpatient surgery. This is the least invasive way to perform surgery, ensuring the patient is comfortable and heals quickly.

During this entire process, our registered dietitians will be there to offer unwavering support and expert advice. Whether you need help customizing a personalized post-operative diet or have any nutrition-related questions, rest assured that we are here for you. We are committed to ensuring your success!
